Discussion:
Possible to bypass recharagable batteries in Braun shaver?

Hi all,

My Braun 5564 Universal 4.5w rechargeable shaver has finally stopped working.

It's worked just fine for about 4 years, even after the batteries stopped holding a charge. Now the motor goes very
slowly.

Is it possible to bypass the batteries and route the charging unit's output to the motor, maybe by use of wires? I
won't try this until I get some advice. I don't want any shocking experiences. :-)

Thanks, and Season's Greetings.

Probably not.
It's fairly easy to replace the cells, in many of these sort of devices.
What dimensions are the batteries?

One series of Braun that we have in this household uses a nylon (or similar)
cage to hold the AA size cells. Unfortunately it is impossible to release the
old cells without destroying the cage, and without the cage it is awkward to
install new cells.

Apologies for the delay in replying. The holidays and all. :-)

The dimensions are non-standard (for normal batteries):
Two yellow batteries, marked XRL, and 69 or 96, size about 1 1/4" long & 3/4" in diameter.

Ok.
In proper measurements, I make that about 32mm long by 19mm.

I suspect this is a 2/3 AF cell.
BT00165, 1.60 each.
Can you solder?

Thanks. Yes, I can solder.
Are you affiliated with this company? Just curious.

Simply cutting a battery lead might work but it also might detect
this as a fault and stop supplying power directly to the motor.
In that case, perhaps a resistor to simulate a trickle charge..

Folks at sci.electronics .msc and sci.electronics.repair may have
experience with this model. Taking them apart can be tricky I
hear. At least some have "self destruct" assembly that is not
harmful to humans of course, but may make reassembly a nightmare
if not impossible. Merry Christmas!

Pretty pointless, the charger will not likely run the unit anyway.

Pull the pack, and go to "batteries plus" or similar outfit, they will
rebuild the pack complete with welded straps.

I was wondering about this. The charger- depends on what it outputs, and how it's regulated, doesn't it? Way beyond
me.

Extremely unlikely
The service manual implies no cell needed to run the motor as it
states:
"Supply by means of one built-in rechargeable battery or by direct
mains supply. A built-in electronic charger controls the supply
automatically,"

My old dandy Phillips Tracer can do this but perversely my Braun
5503 can't and its manual says:
." by 2 built-in, rechargeable batteries resp.
automatically by a built-in battery charger and independently
from the mains voltage or frequency."

Since (as I recall) it runs, albeit slowly (shorted cell? ), I
would surmise it can run directly off the supply but taking it
apart to try is another matter...

Thanks. I've added these groups and will use them if this group isn't able to solve the situation.

Happy New Year!
